Mapbox is a great alternative to Google Maps.

Is mapbox open source or cheaper to use than Google Maps? OpenStreetMaps is open source and free to use. I would prioritize a more affordable alternative before adding direct competitors, but maybe Mapbox is a lot cheaper – or free?
I checked the mapbox website, here pricing tab, and I found out it has a similar request paying system like Google Maps does. I would prefer open source models too.
