What Is a Directory of Directories?
This is a term used where a site offers a directory, such as Spaces Engine, and each item in that directory can also list an infinite number of products, services, properties, cars or anything else. Other terms include Hierarchical Directories or Multi-Level Directories.
Can Spaces Engine Be Used This Way?
Spaces Engine allows Spaces to display a list of services or products within it’s Services tab. However, if you require more advanced listings, we suggest creating a custom tab with the help of a developer. This allows you to display absolutely anything you need, via custom code or a 3rd-party plugin.
What About Other Directory Plugins?
There are plugins available that allow users to create directories of directories, such as Directorist and Directories Pro. These work by providing a very basic directory item (that you can use for pretty much anything and therefore require quite a bit of customisation). These items can then have sub-items.
Spaces are different – they are specifically for businesses, brands or organisations. So the sub item of a Space would be another Space. This would be a quite niche requirement, but there are sites using Spaces Engine that have achieved it with great results.
Currently, no product offers a directory of directories feature that also deeply integrates with BuddyPress or BuddyBoss, utilizing its activity feed, messaging, and other social features.
Can Spaces Have a Marketplace?
Version 2 of Spaces (Q4 2024 – Q1 2025) will allow Spaces to list WooCommerce products. This will work by displaying all the products of a particular category or tag, so sites will need to configure WooCommerce accordingly.
We have looked at providing other marketplace options, and are still seeking feedback on which products we should support, such as WPAdverts, Dokan, WC Vendors and so on.
